NeoGaf has posted a patent that Nintendo had filed back in February for a “Stationary Game Apparatus” which practically translates to a new home console from Nintendo. Whether that’s a look into Nintendo’s next system the NX, or it could be an update to their current system the Wii U.
The interesting thing about this patent is that there is no disc drive so that means all digital games. As the Nerdist reports that this includes a controller like game pad, like the Wii U and there are doubts that the Wii U game pad will be transferred over to the Nintendo NX, but that’s just a guess from us and the Nerdist.
Also, I doubt Nintendo would go all digital with their next system simply due to the backlash that Microsoft received at E3 two years ago when they said you couldn’t trade in games for the Xbox One. If the NX was all digital that would mean no used game market and that would anger a lot of console gamers.
However, the flip side to that could be a lower price point for games. Using a model like Steam, Nintendo could bring all digital games to market at a lower price since there would be no case and no physical disc. They wouldn’t have to guess the market for a game and risk a lot of unsold games. So, if Nintedo went all digital with the NX but offered games say at a $20-40 price point I think most would be forgiving for the lack of used games for a system.
So what do you think, is this a look at the Nintendo NX or an update for the Wii U? Comment below dear reader.
