Gears of War Ultimate Edition Brings Back A Favorite

In the video game world over the last couple of years what is old is new again.  Whether it’s sequels, prequels, reboots, or in this case remakes we are getting Next Gen editions of our favorite franchise.

However, Microsoft did something today that I have not seen a gaming company do with their franchise remakes, and that is a remake of the trailer that got everyone excited for the original Gears of War.  Granted it isn’t a shot for shot remake of the original “Mad World” trailer.  This new trailer shows the updated game play and graphics for the remade game.

The selling point of this remade trailer is the same as the original and that’s the hopelessness conveyed by Gary Jules’s Mad World.  I think the best way to sum up this hauntingly beautiful song is my dad’s reaction to it when I played it for him almost a decade ago.

“Did this guy ever finish his album or did he off himself?”

Which is a great reaction to this song.  As I said above this song conveys just absolute helplessness and that is the theme of the Gears of War games.  You’re involved in what seems like an endless war and if you win this war what did you really win?  Humanity is scattered in this post apocalyptic game and what’s left of the land seems inhabitable.

It’s a great gaming franchise and I’m excited for the Xbox One remake on August 25th and Gears of War 4 that is due out next year.

Check out the trailer below.
