When it was announced at E3 it seemed like Nintendo had hit a homerun with it’s new Classic NES but nope, as usual Nintendo fucked that up. It seems like since the Wii U launch Nintendo just can’t get out of their own way.
Nintendo has been around in one for or another for more than a 100 years and it seems like they’re still using the same business practices of the early 1900s. It seem to have started with the naming of the Wii U making many customers think that it was just an add-on to the Wii, because of that the Wii U was quite simply a disaster, in spite of being a fun system almost no one bought it. However there was a saving grace to the Wii U, Amiibos. In case you don’t know what those are, Amiibos are little statues that you put on the Wii Pad and give you various content within in the game. They were extremely popular but guess what, Nintendo didn’t make nearly enough (for whatever reason) and it took them nearly a year to restock the first wave of figures (seriously it took me a fucking year to get Samus Nintendo, what are you doing?).
I foolishly thought Nintendo would have learned from this. Last year after the massive backlash from fans over Amiibos, Nintendo said they underestimated demands (they didn’t) and they would quickly get these amiibos back on shelves, and as mentioned above it took them a fucking year to do this. So this morning when I woke up and headed over to Best Buy I knew there would be a demand for the console but I figured Nintendo knew this since the world went fucking insane for it. Sadly, my Best Buy only got 5, Target 3, Gamestop got less then 10. What the fuck Nintendo? It’s not like I’m in some rural flyover state, I live in the Washington DC area, how in the world did my area only get 20 or so NES Classics. Nintendo should have supplied each store with 20 or so consoles, after all this is just a tiny box that isn’t hard to make. Once again Nintendo has created a false shortage and demand on a product for no reason. Honestly we should have known when there were no preorders allowed which tells us that retailers had no idea how many systems they would get.
So why would Nintendo do this? Easily, to get everyone hunting and talking about their new mini console (see even we’re doing it) but here is the problem Nintendo, you’re not making money. This isn’t the 80’s where you were the only game in town. There is the Xbox, PlayStation, mobile devices and PC gaming, not to mention people have short attention spans these days. Yes we’re all demanding a classic NES now, but by the time Nintendo gets around to making more we’ll all have moved on. Look at the above mentioned Amiibos, yes Nintendo has finally restocked the first few waves but from the time I grabbed my Samus last week to my trip to Best Buy today, they’ve maybe sold a couple Amiibos. So depending on how long it takes Nintendo to restock (and they fucking drag their feet on this shit, ever since the N64) their might not be a huge demand anymore. Nintendo has lost a lot of potential revenue by not even coming close to meeting demand today. Also the fact that the Classic NES doesn’t appear in any Black Friday ads means stores don’t expect to have any in stock by the busiest shopping day of the year.
And because I’m already on the subject of Nintendo being foolish with supplying a demand there are rumors that when the Switch comes out that they won’t even come close to meeting demand. Seriously Nintendo, what the fuck are you doing? You make it so hard to defend you.
