In recent years Disney and Marvel have been very selective and reserved in licensing out their properties. For the most part in the last couple of years we’ve really only got the Amazing Spider-Man games based off of the Andrew Garfield movies as well as the Disney Infinity Series, Lego Games and Marvel vs Capcom 3, but as far as a true narrative game, it was basically Spider-Man.
Not since Marvel Phase One have we had games based on our favorite Avengers. We got Ironman 1 and 2, Captain America, The Incredible Hulk and Thor. All made by Sega, all pretty “meh”. They weren’t terrible but they weren’t memorable either. It was this luke warm feeling towards these games which made Marvel pull back and not license out their movie franchise for games anymore. However, that might be changing.
Today, Square Enix released a teaser trailer for an upcoming Avengers game with the hash tag #ReAssemble which could be the games title Avengers: ReAssemble. Given the images shown in the teaser, Cap’s shield, Banner’s broken glasses, Stark’s gauntlet, and Thor’s hammer all discarded it’s obvious that the team has been beaten down. Could this foe be Thanos? It would make an awesome tie-in for Infinity War coming out next year or could this be a Civil War aftermath? Also, doesn’t this game relate to the movies at all or are they for the comics? Either way, the tone of the teaser is that the Avengers need to ReAssemble to face a great foe.
The game is being published by Square Enix, but is being developed by Crystal Dynamic, the folks behind the wonderful Tomb Raider Reboot so the game is in wonderful hands if you ask me. However, that does beg the question of gameplay style and game engine. What Crystal Dynamic did for Tomb Raider worked for Tomb Raider, but I don’t think that would translate well to an Avengers game, however I have all the faith in the world that Crystal Dynamic will come up with something.
So what do you think about this announcement? Are you excited for a new Avengers’ game? Let us know in the comments below.
