Is Konami the Most Hated Game Publisher

Among Gamers for the longest time Electronic Arts was the most hated developer, other than buying the exclusive NFL right for their Madden Football franchise.  Outside of seemingly only being interested in franchise and not good one off games EA has never been as nefarious as gamers have made them out to be.

But all the hate on EA has been refocused by gamers and placed upon Konami, and for pretty good reasons.

Entering 2015 Konami should have been riding high, they had Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, one of the most anticipated games of 2015, and then the extremely successful launch of P.T. which turned out to be a demo for the new Silent Hills game which would be developed by Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima and filmmaker Guillermo del Toro and star The Walking Dead star Norman Reedus.  People were extremely excited.

Then it all came crashing down this past spring.  Nearing the release of Metal Gear it was reported that Kojima had left Konami, then it was later reported that he was fired and had completed Metal Gear under terrible working conditions and no money.  Not to mention his name was removed from the box art, which pissed so many fans off to the point when they bought their own copy the wrote on the cover “A Hideo Kojima Game”.

The truth isn’t really known since neither side has said anything official and all we have is from anonymous sources.  It’s probably somewhere in the middle but the parts of Kojima running out of money to complete Metal is more than likely true.  This is apparent because there are a lot of repeat missions in the game which are just the same missions (probably 15% of the main story missions) but harder, and there was an entire third chapter of the game that wasn’t finished and if you’ve played the game is a bit of a loose end that is never sewn up.

By all means this doesn’t lessen the enjoyment of Metal Gear 5, that game is awesome and easily a 9.5 out of 10 in my opinion, but it would have been great to play that third chapter (see the video below, but beware massive spoilers for the game).

So with Kojima’s departure we got a not wholly completed Metal Gear Solid 5 but one that was indeed worth $60, but on top of that we learned that Silent Hills would be canceled and P.T. would be removed from the PlayStation Store so if you didn’t download it then you’d never get to play it.  Which by the way, dumb move Konami, what they should have done was just charged people $5 to download it and would have made a ton of money since PS4s with the game still on the hard drive were selling for over a $1000.

On top of Silent Hills being cancelled del Toro said that the experience with Konami had made him decide to never work on a video game again, so thanks Konami.

All of this, and rumors that Konami is just going to sit on all their franchises and only use them for mobile games and pachinko machines has earned them so much fanboy rage.  Say what you will about EA they’ll at least make video games still.

So what say you dear reader?  Is Konami number one on your hate list?  For me, I’m more disappointed than mad.  I honestly don’t want another Metal Gear game if Kojima isn’t involved, and though I would have liked to play Silent Hills, we have no idea if the game would have been good, after all the last time Kojima worked on a Konami property that wasn’t Metal Gear it was Castlevania and that didn’t turn out so hot.
