As many of you know Ben Affleck has stepped down as director of The Batman and he released a statement basically saying that the movie was too big and he didn’t feel like he could direct and star in it to the best of his ability. My bullshit meter went off for two reasons, one was Ben has made big movies and stared in them like Argo, and he had said he would only step down if he didn’t like the script, so naturally I thought, “man he must not like that script”. Right after that statement Warner Bros tried to do some damage control by saying how great the script was, which immediately confirmed to me that is sucked, since right before Batman v Superman came out WB said their board gave the movie a standing ovation after screening it. This tells me that their board has no fucking clue what makes a good movie (this wouldn’t surprise me) or they’re full of bull shit, which could also be true.
Well now coming from Collider Movie Talk, host John Campea had this to say:
“I’ve talked to three separate people, both in one way or another connected in some way to what’s going on at Warner Bros. What all three have told me was that — nothing about whether the script was thrown out or whether they liked the script, nothing about the direction Matt Reeves it taking it, none of that — but one of the things that has come out of the conversation with all three is this. They’re telling me that Ben Affleck, make no mistake, he does want out. He doesn’t want to to be Batman anymore, is what I was told.”
“I have been told that Affleck is talking with Warner Bros in an attempt to get out of being Batman. And that if they do not let him out of being Batman, the standalone Batman film that ultimately happens will be the last time we see Affleck as Batman.”
So it’s looking to me that Affleck is trying to get out of playing Batman, he was burned on Daredevil and then burned again on Bat v Supes, so naturally Ben isn’t a big fan of playing super heroes anymore. If this is true it’s a little disheartening that one bad review would make Ben want to take his ball and go home. Also, if Ben wants out now doesn’t bode too well for the Justice League movie. If he felt that this movie was good than he probably wouldn’t feel so uneasy about The Batman.
So if Ben bails and JL sucks where does that leave the DCEU? Will Warners have the balls to reboot it? Recast it? What do you think loyal reader? Let us know in the comments below.
