Since becoming a fan of Doctor Who, a new tradition has developed for me and that is watching the Doctor Who Christmas special on Christmas Day. There’s something very magical about those particular episodes to me that I can’t explain but it’s almost like being a kid again (except “the time of the Doctor” because I AM a fan of 11 and much like him, I don’t like endings). But imagine my surprise today when BBC announced the return of River Song for the Christmas Special.
It’s been a long time since we’ve last seen Alex Kingston in the Tardis. Her last appearance on Doctor Who was right before the 50th Anniversary Special in the episode “In the Name of the Doctor” where the character River Song was the “Electronic Ghost” version of herself from her first appearance. For those unfamiliar with Doctor Who, River Song is the Wife of the doctor and also another time traveler but the two keep meeting out of order whenever they cross paths.
“To be honest, I did not know whether River would ever return to the show, but here she is, back with the Doctor for the Christmas special.” Kingston commented on her return. “Steven Moffat is on glittering form, giving us an episode filled with humour and surprise guest castings. I met Peter for the first time at Monday’s read through, we had a laugh, and I am now excited and ready to start filming with him and the Doctor Who team. Christmas in September? Why not!”
Given the last time the Doctor and River met she was a ghost, many fans (including our very own Josh) began to speculate that this would be Kingston’s final appearance as River. I for one am happy and excited at the news.
