***SPOILER WARNING**** If you’re not caught up on the show or books do not read.

The Ice Dragon Theory is something that is widely disgust among A Song of Ice and Fire readers as it gets hinted at by characters in the book.  Two popular theories for the Ice Dragon is that it (or one of them) lives beneath Winterfell and its breath is what heats the hot springs within the castle’s walls.

Also a popular theory is that the magic within the Wall is a slumbering Ice Dragon and that the Dragon Horn held by Euron Greyjoy will wake the slumbering dragon and bring down the wall, or that the Night King will wake the Ice Dragon and use it against Daeny’s Dragon.

Before I go into my theory just a quick round up for non-book readers, the Ice Dragons are more or less myths and tall tales in Westeros.  As far as we know there is no written record in the world of Song and Ice and Fire of Ice Dragons existing.  They are more or less tales told by sailors who say they’ve seen them flying over the Shivering Sea.  Also, they’re said to be much larger than regular dragons, so if it is on the side of the White Walkers than one of them could do a lot of damage to Daeny’s three.

Okay, now it’s time for my theory which, if I’m right, would be spoiler-ish so proceed with caution.

Just recently I began re-watching Game of Thrones from the very beginning.  So the scene in episode one where they find the dead Dire Wolf (which in and of itself has some nice foreshadowing with a Stag killing the Wolf) they initially find five pups, “one for each Stark child” Jon Snow says, and Bran convinces his dad to let them have them.

As the party of Starkmen are about to leave the scene Jon hears another whimper and finds an all white pup with red eyes.  Theon remarks that it’s a runt and should be Jon’s since he’s a bastard.  Here is my theory on the Dire Wolf that Jon would name Ghost.

First off I don’t think Ghost is a sibling of the other Dire Wolves just like Jon is not a real sibling of the other Stark children.  Further on the fuels my thought of this theory is Ghost being all white, much like the hair of a Targaryen, and fiery red eyes.  I think the was early on foreshadowing for Jon being a secret Targaryen.

There is also more of a magical sense to Ghost than other Dire Wolves.  All of the Starks have a connection to their wolves with Bran warging into Summer in the show, but also Jon and Arya also warging into their wolves in the books.  Also the wolves are highly protective of their masters.  We’ve seen Summer, Nymeria, Greywind, Shaggy Dog, and Ghost all come to the aid of their masters, but, Ghost seems to have a six sense detecting White Wakers.  Like in season one where he knows the Lord Commander is in danger of one, or when he protects Sam from one.  It would seem that Ghost has more going on for him than the others.

About 20 years before he wrote the first book of A Song of Ice and Fire George R.R. Martin wrote a novella called the Ice Dragon which shares a lot of similarities with the world of Westeros.  Even though Martin has said that the two stories take place in different worlds you can draw a lot of similarities to each other, so even though they might not exist in the same world he could have taken some of his ideas from that book.  One such idea was the unusual seasons as the main character was born in the “long winter”.  Another theme he could have used from that book in this series is the idea of Ice Dragons being able to shape shift.

So what if an Ice Dragon disguised itself as a Dire Wolf (like Ned disguising a Targaryen as a bastard Stark) in order to make contact with Jon (or really an man) in order to fend off the White Walkers when winter comes?  It seems far fetch I know, but Martin has been playing the long game with this series for a while now and even in the first book was careful to drop hints and foreshadowing through out that would payoff down the road.  A dragon hiding with Dire Wolves in order to survive is found by Jon Snow?  The could very well have been Martin’s intention with Ghost, like I’ve pointed out before, Ghost seems to be just slightly more special than its siblings and looks very different from them, and wasn’t with them suckling on its dead mother’s teets like the others.

But hey, that just a theory, a Film… oh wait, that’s another YouTube channel all together (the channel is Film Theory, go check them out).  But yeah, that’s my Ice Dragon theory, I honestly think it holds more water than other popular theories like an Ice Dragon below Winterfell or in the Wall.  Let me know what you think of it and feel free to share some of your own.
