Many things lately have been said about Daniel Bryan and his wrestling ability and his charisma with the fans (which is all true) but what really hasn’t been mentioned in the last two days is just what a nice guy Bryan is.
What was well noted two years ago was Bryan’s relationship with Connor Michalek, the young Make a Wish child who took the WWE Universes’ as well as Bryan’s collective hearts by storm Connor’s story touched everyone and it was great seeing Bryan’s reaction to the young, terminally ill child. When Bryan won the Undisputed Title at Wrestlemania one of the first things he did was walk over to Connor and hugged him and told him that he couldn’t have won the title without Connor.
Then also last night one of the first things Bryan addressed was his short hair and trimmed beard. Like myself, Bryan is a big supporter of Wigs for Kids (like myself), but he didn’t just casually mention it, he went into detail the good work Wigs for Kids does for children with cancer. So not only did Bryan take one last moment to share the ring with the WWE Universe, but he also took one last moment to open our hearts to helping children with cancer.
As a father of a son Connor’s age as well as a brother who lost his sister to cancer, Bryan’s reaction to Connor and his speech inducting Connor into the WWE Hall of Fame is so touching that it makes me proud to not only be a WWE fan but a Daniel Bryan fan as well. Unfortunately Connor was sick and dying but Bryan took time out of his very busy schedule to bring a smile to this boy’s face, and for a moment Connor and his entire family forgot about his cancer and Connor was just a regular kid. I don’t think there is enough gratitude a parent can give someone who can do that for their child through all of the physical and emotional pain that they’re going through. Bryan didn’t have to do that he wanted to (as well as probably wishes he could have done more), and in a world of fleeting moments, it’s ones like that you keep with you and when you need it they make you smile.
Bryan will be remembered by most as fantastic wrestler, but for me he’ll always be The Wrestler With a Heart of Gold.
