Well this week has been fun, we got our first look at Rita from the new Power Rangers movies (I don’t care what the internet thinks, I like it) and a ton of trailers. Two trailers we haven’t featured yet are Independence Day 2 and The
Woeful Magnificent 7.
The reason being, I don’t really care about these two movies, ID4-2 is like 18-15 years too late for me to care, and at one point I was super excited about Magnificent 7 because I love westerns and the original was great (and thus far I’ve enjoyed other western remakes like 3:10 to Yuma, Maverick, and True Grit) and the cast for this one (Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, and Vincent D’Onofrio) looks totally legit. Then I saw the trailer and it looks like a generic action film that tries to be “cool”.
If this were say a modern day action film I’d be on board with everything I saw, but it’s not an action film, it’s a Western and it misses the point of what a Western is. Yes, Westerns have gun fights, and minor fist fights (maybe the most realistic fist fights in movies since it’s usually only a couple of punches) but most Westerns (especially the good ones) treat the action as an end to its means. Meaning it’s a last resort, here it looks like action is the forefront and well it looks out of place, especially with a rock song blaring in the background. Just like Ghostbusters, Sony has taken a property from it’s archives and feels the need to make a remake of a movie that didn’t need one and no one asked for. It just proves that Sony is out of ideas and they’re just throwing this at the wall to see what sticks.
Again, I was excited when I first heard about this movie, but the trailer misses every mark with me. Maybe it’s a better film than what the trailer shows, and Sony’s marketing has their heads up their asses, but I think for this movie they chose style over substance which is a shame because this is an awesome cast that could have made a great Western (on par with Unforgiven, the best Western) but sadly this looks like another missed opportunity by Sony.
And as far as ID4-2 goes, looks like destruction porn and it seems like 90% of Earths population gets killed off early, and it 20 years to give us a sequel to a ho-hum movie, so I’ll pass completely on it. But check the trailers out below, let me know what you think. Am I right (of course I am) or am I an idiot for not having hope for these two movies.
