I know last night I said I was going to do a breakdown of the trailer (and this still will be a breakdown, sort of) but after watching it a couple of more times there isn’t much to break down really, for the most part the trailer consists of a bunch of quick cuts and one liners. The only real plot points we get from it are in the opening with Amanda Waller wanted to form a team of a convicts and Rick Flagg reading over their profiles. Real quick, why Tom Hardy, why oh why did you pass on Rick Flagg? So far the few lines we’ve gotten from Joel Kinnaman as Flagg have been delivered very poorly, for instance in the beginning when he’s talking about the team, and then at the end when Harley breaks the window to steal the purse, and he says “Seriously, what’s wrong with you people?” His lines just come off flat and I don’t like him.
While we’re on the subject of actors, if this movie fails, can we stop trying to make Jai Courtney happen Hollywood? Seriously, this guy seems to be cancer to franchise, Die Hard 5, Divergent, Terminator Genisys, seriously Courtney is terrible and he should be flipping shrimp on a barbie at an Outback in somewhere in Southern California, not getting a fourth chance at a major film franchise…just saying.
I’m coming off a bit negative to start, but that’s mostly because I wanted to get that out of the way first. I like the use of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody in the trailer, it’s a song that conveys many tones, and one the is prevalent is chaos, and this movie looks to have a ton of chaos in it, so good choice. However, this feels a little bit like they’re ripping off Hooked On a Feeling trailer from Guardians of the Galaxy. I hope DC and WB don’t mind all the comparisons to Guardians that this movie will get because to everyone it feels like WB saw Guardians and said to DC, “hmm, do we have anything like that?” Had Guardians failed this movie wouldn’t have been green lit for sure. Now we just have to wait and see if it’s as fun.
As far as the fun goes, I think this film has a ton of potential, especially with Leto as the Joker (more on that later), however some of the comedic one-liners in the trailer fell short for me. Mostly because of who was delivering them. Kinnaman doesn’t seem to have any comedic timing, and Margo Robbie’s lines at the start of the trailer and at the end also had poor comedic timing. Also, I love Margo Robbie, but hearing Harley Quinn speak without her trademark southern accent is jarring to me. I’ll probably adjust to it, but I really wish she had that southern tone.
I think the comedy is a big difference between this and Guardians. Guardian’s fun and funny tone was delivered mostly by two actors who have made names for themselves in comedy, Chris Pratt and Bradley Cooper. Also the movie was written and directed by James Gunn, a man known for dark comedies and can get laughs. Suicide Squad on the other hand is written and directed by David Ayer, who is damn good, but his movies have been super serious, like Training Day and Fury, so his experience with humor might not be as sharp as Gunn’s. With that said, Jai Courtney had a couple of decent physical moments that made me chuckle, when he was cut out of the bag and immediately punched a guard, and while shit was going down he was sneaking behind a car drinking a beer. Also, I fully expect Will Smith to give us a few funny line (more than likely a “DAYUM”) as well as Leto as the Joker giving us a few grotesque jokes that will make us laugh then immediately question our morals.
Speaking of Leto, I liked everything I saw of him in this trailer (except his grill, I hope future movies get rid of that). He seems menacing but likable at the sametime, as well as scary as all hell. Both Jack Nicolas and Heath Ledger gave us great Jokers, one played for menacing laughs, one and agent of chaos, but I think with Leto’s Joker we’re going to get the ruthless psychopath we’ve wanted to see on screen. Jack’s was a mobster, Ledger’s was a terrorist, I think Leto’s will be a serial killer (or close to it), which all three fit the character since the Joker is so versatile he can change at the whims of the writers. Also in this trailer Leto felt like he was giving us more of his own performance, unlike the last one where it felt he was trying to be like Ledger.
Two last things about the trailer, one, this has my attention and has me way more interested in it than Batman v Superman. First, the trailer did give away the entire plot of the movie to me. All we know is that this team was assembled to go on a suicide mission. A mission that we think is against the Joker, but honestly since Batman routinely takes him down, I doubt it’s the Joker, I think he just shows up, I don’t think this movie has revealed it’s big bad just yet. Secondly, I get they’re trying to be ironic with the tag line “Worst Heroes Ever” but the moving going public isn’t familiar with this comic and that might be a turn off. If there was more comedy in the trailer than it would work, but like I said the comedy that’s in the trailer falls flat, so let’s get some TV spots with Will Smith cracking wise, because we know he will.
Overall I’m more excited for this movie today than I was yesterday. It looks like it can be a lot of fun. David Ayer has proven he can do action and drama, let’s see if he can deliver us a fun movie as well. The cast looks solid (except for Kinnaman and maybe Courtney) and it looks like it could be a lot of fun. However, this new DCU has only one movie under it’s belt, unlike Marvel who had 6 or so when they rolled the dice on Guardians, and that one movie was greeted with mixed reviews from fans (I didn’t like it at all), so I don’t have the same confidence in WB/DC as I did with Marvel/Disney, but I can’t wait to see this movie and how they handle it. It should be a nice change of pace from the super serious Man of Steel and BvS movies.
So what did you think of the new trailer, let us know in the comments below.
