Long before Resident Evil became the name synonymous with survival horror video games there was one game that raised my anxiety levels and scared the crap out of me, and that was the NES classic Friday the 13th game.
The music is creepy as hell and it keeps a tense atmosphere through out the game as you wander around Camp Crystal Lake, needing to run into Jason in order to beat the game but dreading it at the same time. Granted I was like 7 or 8 at the time and haven’t played the game since so it might not be that scary but I’ve never been so tense playing a video game.
I bring that up because game maker Gun media has launched a Kickstarter to raise funds to make a new Friday the 13th game. The game would be similar to 2K Game’s Evolve where it’s multiplayer with one person playing Jason and seven others playing as the camp counselors. Obviously playing as Jason your job is to kill the other players. As the counselors it’s not really that you’re supposed to kill Jason it’s that you’re supposed to survive. And by survive they don’t mean as a group, but you as a lone player. Which means you can work together with your fellow players or be treacherous and back stab them so they get killed and you make your escape. Which, by the way, should go over well with today’s online multiplayer community, oh I can hear the cursing now.
Rewards for the kickstarter range from your basic $5 “thank you” to $25 minimum gets you a digital copy of the game, to all the way up to 10 Grand where you yourself will be one of the counselors in the game. Right now I’m thinking someone needs to get a hold of Kevin Bacon and get him to pledge 10K so maybe he can survive a night at Camp Crystal Lake.
This is a pretty awesome concept for a survival horror game and I hope it reaches its goal of $700,000, right now it’s a tenth of the way there with 31 days to go (side note, in the time it took me to write this article it raised ten grand). I know I’ll be contributing, shoot $25 will get you the game so that’s probably at least half off what it will cost in stores.
