George Lucas To Direct Episode IX?

First off, I want to apologize for the click-bait-ish headline, but the full headline was too large.  George Lucas is not being considered by Lucasfilms or Disney to direct Episode IX (which is kind of a weird sentence to type), but there is an online petition to persuade Disney and Lucasfilms to hire him to do so.

I will say that it was weird to go see a Star Wars movie that Lucas wasn’t involved in, however, him directing Episode IX is one of the worst fucking ideas I’ve ever heard.  Seriously, have these people not watched the prequels?  They’re fucking terrible, even Episode III.  I know someone out there is saying “well it wasn’t as bad as the previous two.”  No it’s not but that’s like saying “having your hand cut off isn’t as bad as losing a foot,” no it’s not but that doesn’t mean it’s any fucking good.

I know there are people out there who think the prequels are better than the original movies, and I also know these people have no taste and are like fish that are distracted by shiny objects.

The bottom line is this, George Lucas is not a good director.  He got lucky with American Graffiti and A New Hope with the fact that he got a cast of young actors who could act well without much direction, but as you can tell from The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi (not directed by Lucas) the performances of the actors is stronger.

In the prequels Natalie Portman was wooden and cold and looked like a first year film student reading lines, however, you pair her with a good director and she’s winning, BAFTAs, Golden Globes, and the fucking Oscar!  If I didn’t know who she was and the prequels were all I ever saw of her films I would have thought she was one of the worst actresses ever.  You could argue this was early in her career, which is true, but when she was only 13 she was in Leon The Professional and fucking killed it, so no, her shitty acting in Star Wars had more to do with the lack of direction than her acting ability.

The same goes for Hayden Christianson.  He is by no means as talented as Portman, but he’s not as bad as he seems in the prequels.  Again, when paired with a good director he is serviceable.

I know people hold on to nostalgia and like I said above it was weird to see a Star Wars movie that didn’t involve Lucas, but in all honesty had he wrote and directed Episode VII I probably would have skipped it.

If you need another example of how Lucas has lost the magical touch he once had, just look at Indian Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.  Most of the things you hate about that movie were Lucas drive.  The monkey swing, the aliens, the fire ants, pretty much everything you hate was all Lucas’s fault, everything but Shia LaBeouf, that was a Spielberg decision.  In fact Steven Spielberg passed on directing the movie at first, but later changed his mind because he couldn’t imagine anyone else directing an Indiana Jones film.  Now Spielberg never said this, but I’m pretty sure he passed because of dreadful the script was.

Personally, if we’re throwing names into the hat to direct Episode IX, I would love to see Spielberg do it.  He and Lucas have been friends for ages and because of their collaboration on the Indy films I have always wondered what a Spielberg directed Star Wars would look like and I can’t think of a better director to cap off this new trilogy.

So what do you think about this petition?  Do you want George Lucas back directing Star Wars?  If not, who would you like to see direct Episode IX?
