In celebration of Gears of War 4 going gold (I’m getting mine a day late, thanks Best Buy, two day shipping, get it by release date my ass) Microsoft and Universal announced that there will be a Gears of War Movie. Rod Fergusson, the head of development at the Coalition, told Variety that;
“As a way to support the franchise, the next logical step was to make the movie, we’d done comics and novels in the past but the opportunity to work with Universal to bring the movie to life was perfect.”
This is a pretty cool idea, Gears of War was very cinematic in it’s story telling and making the first three games into a trilogy shouldn’t be that hard. Sure it will be an adaption so things will change but as long as the writers and director (none of which have been hired) stick to what made the story in the game good then the movie, at the very least, should be an enjoyable pop corn flick akin to one of Arnold’s or Sly’s 80 action movies. However, pull an Alone in the Dark or House of the Dead and we’d be in for a shit show.
So obviously my hope is that they stick to the original games for the story, it’s there, it’s been done well, and could translate pretty well to the big screen. My fear is they’re going to try and tell some other story and completely fuck up the lore. Though I would like to see some cool stuff from the Pendulum War (that’s where I thought they’d take the series after Gears 3), I think to get this movie franchise off on the right foot (and trust me Universal wants this to be a franchise) than they should just stick to the original games’ story and after that is done maybe expand on the lore.
