As you probably already know the long awaited Nintendo Switch released this past Friday and a lot of people want to know how successful it was. Well that’s a little tough to pinpoint exactly how successful it was.
Well, Nintendo has not released any official numbers yet but judging by retailers it appears to be pretty successful. Eric Bright a GameStop Senior Director of Merchandise said of the Switch, “…one of the strongest and most successful gaming consoles in the last several years.”
There are no official numbers in the US but per Reggie Fils-Aimé this was the best Nintendo console launch in the US. Also reportedly the Switch has sold over 80,000 units in the United Kingdom and 313,700 units in Japan which is roughly 4,000 more than the Wii on its launch. With those numbers and opinions I would say the launch was very successful. However, a successful launch does not translate to a successful console, that will be determined by the games that come out and people continually to buy the system.
However, projections for the system for the first year have been pretty good, ranging from 4.5 million units to 10 million units sold in the first year. It’s hard to really predict this, but with the steady stream of popular games coming out between now and Christmas will probably make this first year pretty successful and make people want to buy the system come Christmas. For example The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (which is killing it with reviewers) has been one of the most successful launch titles on any system with 80% of copies sold were with the Switch. Then at the end of April we’ll get Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, mid summer Splatoon 2, early Autumn Skyrim comes out, and then the holiday season we’re getting Super Mario Odyssey and that’s not even counting FIFA, NBA Live and other 3rd party titles coming out through out the year plus all the amazing looking Indie games Nintendo showcased during its Nindies video.
