The nearly decade in the making and extremely hyped PlayStation 4 exclusive The Last Guardian is almost here and this week there was a playable demo at the Tokyo Gaming Show and well it’s not looking that great.
Early impressions coming from outlets like IGN, Kotakuo, and Polygon aren’t that good. Most of the complaints are with the controls, your bird dog companion not listening to you and difficult to work with, the camera, and overall feels like a PlayStation 2 game.
Some of these complaints don’t surprise me at all since the game started development in 2007 and was made for the PS3 and the fact that since it started development there have been quite a few changes in video games and the way they play. This problem also pops up from time to time with remixes. Games or gaming mechanics that were great in their time don’t always age well and this could be the case with The Last Guardian. Where Ico and Shadow of Colossus were great in their day, their kind of slow plotting puzzle solving isn’t seen much these days and might not be what modern game players are looking for.
All in all The Last Guardian looks great but if it’s play style, mechanics, and camera are stuck in the last gen then this might just be one of those pretty games that plays like crap.
So what do you think about this loyal reader? Does this discourage from the preorder you have no doubtingly placed at your local Gamestop? Are you going to wait for official reviews, or just pass this game by all together? Let us know in the comments below.
