Happy 25th Anniversary Sonic! So obviously Sega has something big planed for you this year. I mean after all last year was the 30th Anniversary for Mario and he got a slew of titles from Nintendo, including the fantastic Super Mario Maker, not to mention two very awesome 8-Bit style amiibos. Well for Sonic, it’s getting, wait for it, a San Diego Comic Con trailer.
“Well,” I can hear you thinking (that’s right I can hear your thoughts), “if it got a trailer at SDCC then the game should be out by Christmas right?”
Ha-ha, no. The game is coming out spring of 2017, just in time for Sonic’s 26th Birthday! Come on Sega, even Nintendo did a “Year of Luigi” for Luigi’s 25th Anniversary giving him his own game.
But as we said on our Live At GexCon Podcast this weekend (click HERE), Sega just can’t get out of their own way.
To make matters worse, this game doesn’t look like anything special. Really just a 32 Bit Version of the original Sega Genesis games. Nintendo went all out for Mario last year with the above mentioned Super Mario Maker, giving us exactly what we wanted, and allowed us to re-imagine Mario 1, 3, Super Mario World, and Super Mario Wii U and post our creations online. So doing that for Sonic would have been great, especially with the loops and secrets the original games had, but nope, and it wasn’t even Team Sonic who made it (which might be all well and good given their last few efforts), no Sonic has been licensed out to Christian Whitehead, Headcannon, and Pagoda West Games.
So three developers get to make a Sonic game and we don’t. Hopefully these three do what Team Sonic could not, and bring the Blue Speedster back to glory. The game will be out next spring for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo NX.
