Konami, dafuq is you doing?! Seriously, what in the blue hell is this? For the last couple of weeks now Konami has been hinting at something big for 2017 the 30th Anniversary of Metal Gear which debut on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987. Well, I hope this game isn’t that big anniversary gift from Konami to us fans.
As we got closer to Gamescom in Germany it leaked that Konami would be showing off Metal Gear: Survive, which would be a four player co-op Metal Gear game. At this point I’m with them. It feels weird to be getting a new Metal Gear game without Hideo Kojima at the helm, but as long as Konami put people in charge of this game who love the game as much as we fans do then I was sure we’d get a good game, and maybe a Metal Gear game more grounded in reality than a Kojima one. As much as I love the man, sometimes he goes off the rails.
Well we did get a trailer at Gamescom and it’s not quite what we were expecting. Yes, it is a four player co-op game with the Metal Gear engine, but to call this a Metal Gear game is a bit of a stretch. As you can see in the trailer below, it opens with the closing scene from Metal Gear Sold V: Ground Zero and shows a lone soldier watching Big Boss take off.
After we get completely batty as the soldier is sucked through a worm hole and is attacked by some sort of weird zombie creature. Now this isn’t a breakdown, but after the opening scene the only thing that seems to be Metal Gear is the roar at the end of it which sounds like Metal Gear Rex, so we’ll have to see.
As far as the game is concerned it looks like a fine new take on zombies (though zombies is very played out by now) but on it’s own it could probably be a fun game, but I feel Konami had this game but didn’t feel it would sell on its own so they tact on the Metal Gear franchise to it.
This goes without saying but this is only a teaser trailer so I’m not judging the game here, but this clearly wasn’t what I was expecting for a 30th Anniversary Metal Gear game. Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think.
