When the Xbox One was announced the name had many of us scratching our heads, “Xbox One? But it’s the 3rd Xbox.” Many of us thought, but the meaning behind the name was that Microsoft wanted this to be our “One” entertainment hub to have all of our media stream through it.
Either way the name was confusing to many but it doesn’t stop there, apparently when the Xbox 360 (which at the time was a curious name as well) was being named Microsoft wanted to call it “The Xbox 3”.
Why? Because they didn’t want to look like they were a generation behind the PlayStation 3, so they’d call it the Xbox 3 to make it look like they had the same number of consoles as Sony. So yeah, Microsoft’s counting is a bit off, but I think we all knew that after their Windows numbering.
