Gear Box’s latest shooter Battleborn went live on PC and Xbox One on Wednesday and after two full evenings of playing the beta I can say, it’s not that fun. Now I want to stress this is not a review at all, the game is still in beta and the point of a beta is for a game company to collect information and tweak the game accordingly. So I don’t want my opinions of the beta to affect your possible purchase of the game.
Like I said in the above paragraph the game isn’t that fun. The rounds are too long, you can’t change your character in the 30 minute long battles, so if you’re a new player and you pick a character you don’t like, well then you’re stuck. The rounds are objective based which is fine, but when you’re playing on a team that is more interested in killing the opposing team than capturing objectives the game gets old quickly.
I played as several different characters all of which have different weapons and abilities and usually in games like that, even if I’m not enjoying the overall game, I can find a character I enjoy playing with and at least get some fun out of it. Unfortunately I could not find that character, Montana, was probably the closest character I could find to make the game a little enjoyable.
I wish I could point out exactly what makes this game no fun for me, but I really can’t. The whole experience just wasn’t fun for me. While playing I saw plenty of high level players who I don’t think were just grinding things out, so the game is enjoyable for others, just not myself or Nelson.
I had high hopes for this since I love the Borderlands series from Gearbox Software and I was hoping for an extremely fun game like those.
Since the game is in open beta until the 18th I suggest you download it yourself and see if it’s your kind of game.
