When it was announced that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was getting remastered the internet rejoiced since that is one of the most beloved CoD and FPS games on console. However, that rejoicing soon turned to sourness once Activision revealed that the only way to play Modern Warfare was to buy the $80 Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare special edition. This of course made the infinite Warfare reveal trailer on YouTube one of the most down voted videos of all-time.
And of course as gamers do, many started thinking that Activision would just eventually release the remastered version of Modern Warfare on its own.
Well today we now know that might not happen. A few redditors (they truly do god’s work) decided to go to Activision’s website and start digging around in the fine print for Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and what they found is that yes you do get a digital copy of Modern Warfare remastered when you buy a hard copy of Infinite Warfare, but, you can only play Modern Warfare if your Infinite Warfare disk is in your system. So for gamers thinking they’d buy the $80 Infinite Warfare, download Modern Warfare, and then just trade in Infinite Warfare so they just have the game they want. Well that’s been shot down apparently.
This little legalise from Activision is telling in a couple of areas. One, it makes it seem like they have little to no faith in the staying power of Infinite Warfare. Two, they definitely want to stop second hand sales of the game since you can’t play Modern Warfare without the disk, and three, we’re probably not getting a stand alone version of Modern Warfare Remastered anytime soon. If being attached to Infinite Warfare to drive up sales than it wouldn’t make financial sense to release a stand alone version of the game shortly thereafter.
My advice, if you can wait a couple of months then I’d say wait and grab the $80 version after Christmas, there is a good chance you might be able to get it for half that since Call of Duty game tend to see steep discounts a few months after release because the hardcore fans buy them on launch and then stock just sits on store shelves and the retailers want to move them and clearance and sales on them soon follow.
Of course if you’re buying the bundle digitally none of this matters because you can’t trade the game in.
