Empire magazine’s new cover features a full body pic of Jared Leto’s Joker and boy does he look dumb.
Before I go on about what I hate about this picture let me start out with what I like. Firstly things we have already seen, the bright green hair and pasty white skin. I dig that. Secondly the cane is a nice touch, I dare to imagine that there is a sword hidden in there. Lastly, and this has nothing to do with the Joker, but Empire has “psycho” and “killer” printed on either side of Leto which is a nice shout out to the Talking Heads song “Psycho Killer” which is just a great song.
Now on to what I hate…everything else. The “Joker” and grin tats across his stomach are just stupid. I like the idea of the long purple coat but not some shiny faux crocodile leather one though. I’m pretty sure I’ve never seen the Joker sport leather (especially something as flamboyant as this) in the comics. One thing about the Joker he always dressed classy. Always in a suit and tie and if we were lucky a fedora as well.
When Leto was announced as the Joker I was excited. In all honesty it was the first piece of casting in the DCU that I thought they nailed, but every time I’ve seen his Joker I get worried, not for his acting, I’m sure that will be fine, but for who David Ayer is going to portray the character. Part of me hopes that the fan theory of this Joker being Jason Todd is true so that way if this Joker is terrible we can blame the fictional Jason Todd and know that somewhere out there in the DCU the real, non-hipster, Joker is lurking and plotting something.
