Last season Hellblazer fans were treated to a live action television show of their favorite comic character John Constantine. DC Comic television properties were the hottest thing going when Constantine premiered on NBC last year. The CW had a pair of hits with Arrow and The Flash and Fox was cashing in with a dreadful re-imagining of Batman’s origin with the surprise hit Gotham, so it was predestine that Constantine would follow suit, right?
Well not exactly.
Actor Matt Ryan shined as the title character, he brought wit, charm and the right about of cynicism that fans of the Hellblazer comics love. Unfortunately the show’s direction wasn’t that great. Instead of have an overarching plot like most dramas these days Constantine went with a “monster of the week” approach, which is fine when done right, however the show could never find it’s footing with some episodes being strong and others just feeling like filler.
Many, including myself, were sad to see the show not get a second season, maybe with a different show runner and or writers something special could have happened, but alas, like all Alan Moore creations, this one was not meant to have a long life off of the pages of comics. You know, that gets me thinking, maybe Moore has cursed all of his creation so that they can’t function outside of the comic medium.
Anyways, Matt Ryan, John Constantine himself, tweeted out a video yesterday announcing that he’ll be reprising his role of Constantine in season four of The CW’s Arrow. Hmm, maybe he’ll show up at Summer Slam as well to help Stephen Amell out against Startdust. One can only hope.
So there you have it Hellblazer fans, Constantine lives on, but sadly only as a guest star.
