David Ayer during the press blitz of Suicide Squad was asked about a sequel to his first foray into Comic book movies and here is what he said about the ending, which by the way SPOILERS! Don’t read this quote if you haven’t seen the movie yet.
“We shot that during the first week of photography… I don’t want to give stuff away but it’s that anything is possible, and that’s the thing, for as much control and commend Amanda Waller has over these guys, at the end of the day they’re supervillains and they’re gonna do supervillain stuff. Plus, the Joker/Harley relationship just seemed like the right button for the movie, it opens so many doors if another one of these were ever to turn up under a rock somewhere.”
Plus the director mused that maybe out there in Hollywood somewhere there is a cocktail napkin with the outline for Suicide Squad 2 on it, which to me seems premature.
Yes the movie did very well it’s opening weekend raking in $135 million, however most of that was made Thursday and Friday with a 40% drop off into Saturday and Sunday (which isn’t good) so one has to wonder what the drop off into this weekend will be, especially with Pete’s Dragon and Sausage Party opening. This also comes on the news that the film will probably have to make almost $800 million to break even (see the video below from The Know on the break down of that) and it might not be screened in China due to its darker tone.
Couple all of that with the fact that DC has their movies slated through 2019 and the fact that the only profitable DC film (just barely) Man of Steel took three years just to have its sequel green lit (with no release date so far) and it makes me think that Ayer is jumping the gun here.
I’m glad he’s excited, I’m glad he’s passionate, but even if WB said a sequel was a go we probably wouldn’t see it for another 4 years (damn that’s a long time between movies), but at least if that were the case we’re not going to get a muddled, hastily written script like we got with this one.
