Anthony Mackie On His Falcon Becoming Captain America

This past weekend at the Salt Lake Comic Con Anthony Mackie was in attendance and at his panel was asked on whether he or Bucky  ( Sebastian Stan) should replace Chris Evans as Captain America.  Here is what Mackie had to say;

“I think  Sebastian Stan would be a great Cap, but then we’re left without Bucky. I think I’d be a great Cap, but then we’re left without a Falcon.”

Mackie also continued with;

 “I feel like kids don’t get race. We preach so much to kids that you can be anything you want to be, and then we follow it with ‘except,’ and we have to leave that ‘except’ off.”

I think Mackie is completely right on all fronts here.  I’ve been a fan of Sam Wilson’s Falcon for a long time now, as a kid I loved Captain America comics and my favorites were when he teamed with Falcon, so as a fan of both when the comics shifted to having Sam as Cap I thought it was cool but at the same time I had always wanted to see Sam’s Falcon get thrust into the lime-light.  I felt the same way about Bucky when he became Cap after Steve was assassinated.  We got a new Cap but lost the Winter Soldier.

I like what Marvel is doing to make their comic and movie rosters more diverse, every boy and girl needs a character they can relate to, but I think what Marvel should do is promote their characters they already have.  I’d much rather see a Falcon comic series where they make Sam’s original character a bigger deal.  Same way I feel about Batman, as cool as it was when Dick Grayson was Bats, I liked seeing Nightwing get a bigger role than seeing Dick as Batman.

The difference between Batman and Cap is that Batman is a symbol as well hero who’s identity is still secret, as where Cap (especially in the movie) is known as Steve Rodgers.  Where Cap originally started as a symbol that character is Steve.  Steve’s beliefs and ideas are inter-woven into Captain America to where they are pretty much inseparable.

So what do you think?  Do you agree with Mackie and feel that by making Bucky or Sam Cap we lose a cool character in Winter Soldier and Falcon or do you think that this is the natural evolution for the Captain America character?  On a side note, I love Mackie as Sam Wilson and if they past the mantle of Cap to him I’d love to see it.
